Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through the aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay quickly was captivated with the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was socially conscious and taught her how to use art as a method to express herself. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her youth, however she would spend every summer with her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one of the members of the jury and look through their trash. Her tasks left her disappointed in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small following her graduation from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. Alongside PR, her agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
